Lefty finally captures the Claret Jug at Muirfield

Watch: Phil Mickelson kept cool under pressure and finally captured his first Open Championship beating Henrik Stenson by 3 strokes on his 20th appearance at The Open.

Lefty at the open

Became easily the oldest major winner in history when he won May’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, less than a month before his 51st birthday.

Mickelson went into the event ranked 115th in the world, but eight years on from his fifth major triumph – in The Open at Muirfield – he produced a magnificent display to win by two.

After no top-10 finishes on his first 11 trips to The Open, the left-hander has since had two seconds and a third in addition to his 2013 triumph. At Royal Troon in 2016 he finished 11 shots clear of the third-placed JB Holmes, only to be edged out by Henrik Stenson in one of the great major duels. He was also a runner-up at Royal St George’s a decade ago.

Mickelson has three Masters victories and now two PGA successes to his name, but at the U.S. Open he has been second a record six times - most agonisingly in 2006 when he double-bogeyed the last hole to lose by one to Geoff Ogilvy.

America's most experienced Ryder Cup player with 12 caps, he has played in over 100 majors and, although he has never reached world No. 1, he was second in the rankings for a stunning 270 weeks.
