Glover was ranked only 71st in the world and had never made the cut at the U.S. Open when he came through qualifying to play in 2009 at the feared Bethpage Black, where he scored a second-round 64 (only one outside the major record at the time) and beat Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes by two.

A second successive Presidents Cup cap followed and two years later he had another PGA Tour success, his third, at the Wells Fargo Championship.

The former Walker Cup player – he lost to Luke Donald in the singles at Sea Island in 2001 – fell from 15th to the world to 634th in 2015. However, he has battled his way back since then and played his first Open Championship for six years at Royal Portrush, finishing joint 20th.

Glover will be back at Royal St George’s after making it through to the PGA Tour’s season-ending 30-man Tour Championship in 2019, a year after coming second in the equivalent event on the Web.com Tour.

He shared the halfway lead with eventual winner Darren Clarke on Sandwich’s last staging of The Open in 2011, but slipped back into a tie for 12th.

In the week before The Open he earned his fourth PGA Tour title - and first for 10 years - at the John Deere Classic.
